ReUseIt.com offers a large variety of reusable, sustainable products for every aspect of your day, including travel mugs. I never had a use for such a product until I started drinking tea recently. Since then I've been searching for a mug that I can take with me while I'm out, is made from safe materials and offers good insulation to keep my tea hot.
For this review I received the JOEmo XL Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug. This 16oz travel mug features a 360 degree drink-top, leak-proof screw-on lid, stainless steel fine mesh tea strainer, and a black zippered mug holder. It is supposed to keep your beverages hot or cold for up to 6 hours, and I can tell you that it definitely does an amazing job!
I really like the mesh tea strainer for steeping my tea. I put my tea in the strainer first, then secure the strainer into the mug, and finally, add hot water and the lid. Once finished steeping, I just take out the strainer, replace the lid and enjoy. Alternatively, you can add the tea first, then the strainer, hot water, then the lid. This way you don't need to take out the strainer and can start drinking once the tea reaches your desired strength. Since I do herbal teas I can just head out the door while it steeps without worrying about it getting bitter. I tend to prefer a stronger tea anyway. The strainer's mesh is very, very tiny so my loose leaf tea isn't able to get through at all. It's quite impressive actually!
The 360 degree drinking top is very unique. By pushing down the black button in the middle of the silver, the edge around the outside of the silver opens up, allowing the beverage to come out. You can drink from anywhere around the black rim of the mug which makes it very convenient and hassle-free. If you look at the underside of the top it has multiple pieces and is pretty much all polypropelyne plastic. It's relatively easy to clean despite all the pieces, but it is more complex than many basic lids out there. The complexity of the lid does contribute to the travel mug's ability to keep your beverages completely hot or cold for hours, and also keep it pretty much leak proof even without the screw-on lid though.
I really wanted to love every aspect of this travel mug. After all, it's design is especially unique, it keeps my tea hot for hours, it's very well made and appears pretty durable. However, I just didn't enjoy drinking from it knowing that my hot tea was passing right by plastic just before going ingesting. I didn't realize that the entire lid apparatus was made of plastic, otherwise I would have thought twice before reviewing. I never heat plastic in the microwave or any other heat source so naturally this was not ideal for me. But, in my opinion this mug is still okay for use with cold beverages which it also does an amazing job of keeping cold for hours.
