Our Experience with Day Out With Thomas at Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California

Thank you to Day Out With Thomas for sponsoring today's discussion. I received free tickets to attend a DOWT event for with my family. However, this is my completely honest opinion and may be different from yours.

This past week we headed to the California Central Coast for a few days of relaxing family fun. After hanging out as beach bums for a couple days at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, we had the pleasure of switching gears on Friday. We went with total Thomas immersion for Buddy with the Day Out With Thomas event at Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California. {Day Out With Thomas will still be in Felton the weekend of August 2-4! Upon arrival we were given a map with an event schedule to keep up with all the fun things to do. The main event was the ride with Thomas which lasted 25 minutes. It was incredibly fun for Buddy (despite the look on his face!), and going through the Redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains was beautiful.

 

Other than having a specific time of departure for our train ride with Thomas at 11:45am, we had free reign before and after to participate in The Imagination Station activities.

Along with these activities there was also face painting, a Thomas theater with Thomas videos, storytelling, bounce houses, a bubble station, a magic/juggling show, and of course, shopping for Thomas and Friends toys and gear.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated parts of the whole day for some kids is getting to meet Sir Topham Hatt! Buddy completely chickened out so we didn't get to see him. Poor kid had been talking about this day for weeks. But when it came down to it and actually being there, he was totally overwhelmed for most of the day. Hence, the lack of smiling photos! All he wanted to do was play at the train tables, but there were only two trains at each of the tables (there were five tables or so) which was hard with so many kids there. However, I'm sure you can see how easy it is to spend a whole day at this event. We were there from about 10:45 to 3.

I highly recommend arriving at any Day Out With Thomas event as soon as they open and before the crowds roll in. Since we arrived an hour before our scheduled train departure (11:45 am), we were able to participate in a few activities while there waited. When we returned from our train ride the crowd had doubled! However, Buddy eased up after the train ride and wasn't in such a mood so he wanted to do more activities that he didn't want to do earlier. Overall he loved the whole experience and is already talking about next year!

Roaring Camp Railroads also has lots to see in itself, from the General Store to their other trains and historical areas. It felt like we had stepped back in time a bit!

This was a steam engine that apparently came from Hawaii and only runs during Day Out With Thomas every year. It ran just a short way to the far parking lot and back about every ten minutes. Buddy insisted on riding it a couple times, just because. He was officially on cloud nine after such a train-filled day.

Are you going to be in the Santa Cruz area this weekend? Day Out With Thomas will be running for one more weekend, August 2-4! Otherwise, Roaring Camp Railroads has a couple train ride options, including a Beach Train that goes all the way down the mountain to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Keeping Cool with Little Bites Ice Pop Molds from Kinderville {Review}

We're well into summer and I'm so over this month-long major heat wave here in California. I'm running out of indoor activities for my outdoor loving boy and I loathe the thought of spending another afternoon in the backyard watching him play with the hose while he soaks everything (including myself while he's at it). That wouldn't be too bad but it's so hot that the water is a tad bit warm and not so pleasant...so, I've been trying to keep things fun inside as much as possible with art projects, playing cars with mommy and making LEGO houses. But it's not enough!! Kids just love being outside so we needed a solution to keep us cool. That's where Kinderville, which makes reusable silicone food storage and serving ware, has helped out a lot. 

Welcome to the little things that have saved my sanity. Little Bites Ice Pop Molds are silicone popsicle molds with a tapered design for easy and clean eating of any homemade frozen treat. They are available as a set of four in bright, fun colors. Just fill with whatever fresh ingredients you'd like, pop the lid on, and put in the freezer! You can squeeze the bottom like a tube of toothpaste to bring the yummy goodness up as you eat it. I typically don't buy store-bought frozen treats (except for natural ice creams), so these are a great solution for our family.

Each mold holds about 3.5 ounces which is equivalent to most of those fruit puree pouches you see on the market today. So, that makes them a perfectly satisfying, portioned treat for little ones (ummm, and me too!). I like that they are dishwasher safe, but I opt to hand wash these since I'm a total perfectionist and I have to get the inside corners myself. The lids fit very snugly which is perfect because I know Buddy won't be able to open it if he's feeling sneaky. :)

Due to the excellent design of these molds, they're also great for creamy pops too! You know, like a frozen yogurt tube? Unfortunately I had no yogurt to mix with my pureed organic peaches, so I opted for a really yummy treat instead. Vanilla ice cream! I just threw it all into my blender, poured it into the molds, put them in the freezer and viola! A delicious frozen treat for a hot day. Practically any fruit combo pureed in a blender will work, and Buddy likes to join in the fun and help me make them. There are so many combinations that the possibilities are endless!

I'm cautious about any material that's not glass when it comes to food storage. However, silicone is on my safe material list if it's not being heated, so I'm not concerned with the safety of these at all. Besides, silicone is much safer that plastic any day in my book, and these molds are BPA-free, pthalate-free, lead-free, and non-leaching. The reusable aspect of these make them a practical addition to any kitchen, and frozen treats in these molds can be enjoyed by the whole family. We're really glad we discovered Kinderville!

Show Your Love :: July is National Park and Recreation Month!

Did you know this July is National Park and Recreation Month? Your local parks are encouraging everyone to come out this month and experience all the wonderful aspects of parks and recreation!

 Nationwide, recreation departments have organized events and activities to help families spend quality time together, enjoy nature and get active. This provides a great opportunity to not only make the most of the beautiful weather, but also to take a stand against the obesity epidemic and technology trends that consistently keep more kids indoors and living less active lifestyles.

As part of Park and Recreation Month, the National Recreation and Park Association is encouraging everyone to show the love for local parks and recreation and wants everyone to answer the question, "I Love my Parks and Recreation Because..." You can fill in the blank social media poster that can be filled in and shared, and enter in a fun month-long weekly photo contest that encourages everyone to show and share the LOVE for local parks! The NRPA website includes information on all of the above initiatives, free downloadable resources as well as a calendar of events scheduled nationwide.

In an effort to get out and do this summer, as a family we created a Summer Bucket List. It includes a lot of outdoor activities, new places, and fun events that are put on by our local Park and Recreation department. It's been fun to say the least, and it's been an absolute joy to spend such quality time with my husband and son. As a new homeschooling family (and just trying to get out more too), we're finding an abundance of educational opportunities in our back yard through local parks, museums and events and it doesn't end with summer! This week we'll actually be heading out to Santa Cruz for a few days, and I have a couple State Parks on our list to stop by. We're also hoping to visit the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento in the near future. We went last year and Buddy was absolutely enthralled! You know how much he loves his trains.

This summer we're getting out and creating more memories like these from years past at local parks. Are you? Some of your fondest memories are probably of a summertime adventure as a kid. So let's give those experiences and memories to our kids too.
